ONE OF THE CLUB’S LARGEST FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES

Pancake Breakfast

Approximately 37,000 hotcakes served and counting! Once each year in approximately 4 hours the Kiwanis Breakfast Club of Seminole has used 70 pounds of batter mix to serve almost 1,200 pancakes topped off with 15 lbs. of blueberries, 20 lbs. of strawberries, 4 lbs. of chocolate chips and 7 gallons of maple syrup. In addition, 84 lbs. of sausage links, 12 gallons of orange juice and approximately 20 gallons of fresh brewed coffee is served. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 concerns, the club decided in 2021 and 2022 to cancel its popular 39-year Annual Pancake Day fundraising event. The club postponed the 2023 event but is looking forward to resuming a Pancake Day in the spring of 2024.

The club purchased the first of its two slightly-used, commercial electric griddles in 1981. Back in those early days, the breakfast was held in the Seminole United Methodist Church’s fellowship hall. In 1999 a club member suggested we consider moving the breakfast to the Pow Wow Festival and the Seminole Pow Wow Festival organizers extended the club an invitation. The Seminole Recreation Center was in its final stages of construction at that time so our Pancake Day was held outside under a large tent. The club continued this event in a tent setting on the midway grounds over the next four years always holding its breath because we were at the mercy of the weather. There were a few chilly mornings, but fortunately we never had to cancel or postpone the breakfast. Our Pancake Day moved into the recreation center auditorium in 2006.

The Kiwanis club’s members help stage the breakfast, along with friends, family members and community volunteers. Additional help is provided by members of our two sponsored K-Kids clubs at Oakhurst and Seminole elementary schools. The fundraising event has grown each year in both attendance and community support. In 2008 the club introduced live entertainment during the breakfast showcasing the talents of local youth and community groups. In 2016 the club added its “Karing Korner” selling numerous themed gift baskets and donated gift certificates, sports collectibles and other great must-have items.

It’s important to note that 100% of the net proceeds received from our Pancake Day are used to support our numerous community service projects through our club’s 501(c) (3) non-profit foundation.
