K-Kids was chartered in 2000 and is a service program of Kiwanis International. It is the largest service organization for elementary school students with over 22,000 members and 1,100 clubs worldwide serving their communities.
K-Kids is a student-led community service organization under the guidance of volunteer teacher-advisors. A Kiwanis club, composed of like-minded, service-oriented people from the community, serves as the club’s sponsor. K-Kids operate under school regulations and draw its members from the student body (grades 3-5). K-Kids club members discover their passion to serve, desire to lead and their ability to engage and collaborate with others to better their school and community.
In big and small ways, K-Kids are changing the world around them. But the most significant change happens in the kids themselves. K-Kids can help young people answer their call to lead. Every person has leadership potential, and service clubs provide a forum for young leaders to unlock theirs. K-Kids can also provide opportunities for students to discover their heart to serve. When students discover their heart to serve, they decide that serving others is a new, exciting way of life. The service club experience at a young age can help students accept their own ability to make a difference, enhance their knowledge of their own passions and convictions, and develop their ability to empathize with those in need in their communities.
The Kiwanis Breakfast Club of Seminole sponsors and participates in the K-Kids clubs at Oakhurst and Seminole elementary schools which for the 2024-2025 school year had 40 and 29 members, respectively. K-Kids members identify needs within their school and community and develop a plan of action to meet those needs. The service projects of the Oakhurst and Seminole clubs have included collecting items for the local SPCA, coats and canned goods for those in need, and coloring books and crayons for children at John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. They’ve organized a teacher appreciation event, made cards to seniors in assisted living facilities, made Christmas ornaments for a local residential senior center, and made cards and collected items to be sent to our military veterans serving overseas. For Valentines Day, cards were made and delivered along with candy to the Seminole fire department. Other projects included a Halloween “reverse Trick-Or-Treat” at Freedom Square where the K-Kids in costumes gave residents candy and treats. The kids also assisted the special needs teachers with posters supporting ‘inclusive” to recognize students that are just as special as all the students in the school.
Making a positive difference within their school and community is what K-Kids is all about!
