Seminole Middle School Chess Club

The Seminole Middle School Chess Club was launched in the fall of 2025 through a partnership between Seminole Middle School, the Kiwanis Club of Seminole Breakfast, and the Kiwanis Club of Seminole, inspired by the vision of Principal Dr. Ovalle. Since its inception, the chess club has quickly become one of the school’s most engaging and well-attended student activities.

The club meets every Friday during both lunch sessions, regularly attracting more than 50 students each week. Students gather to learn, compete, and, most importantly, enjoy the game of chess while developing friendships and a strong sense of community.

During its first year, the club proudly hosted a student chess tournament as part of the Pinellas County Schools Elementary and Middle School Student Experience event, as well as the exciting “March Madness” Seminole Middle School Chess Tournament. These events gave students the opportunity to showcase their skills, build confidence, challenge themselves, and connect with fellow chess enthusiasts from across the county.

Chess provides far more than an opportunity to play a game. It helps students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, patience, concentration, and strategic planning. It also encourages sportsmanship, resilience, and the ability to learn from both successes and setbacks—valuable skills that extend beyond the chessboard and contribute to academic and personal growth.

The continued growth of the Seminole Middle School Chess Club reflects the enthusiasm and dedication of its students, the support of the school, and the power of community partnerships. The Kiwanis Clubs are proud to support this program and help provide Seminole Middle School students with an opportunity to learn, compete, and grow through the game of chess.
