KEEPING PINELLAS TRAIL CLEAN
Adopt-A-Mile Program

(L-R) Elementary school students with parents join Kiwanians Charlene, Leda & Linda on the trail.
The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail began in 1990 with 5-mile section which became immensely popular and exceeded expectations. This recreational trail has since grown to a 75-mile continuous loop extending from St. Petersburg to the Pasco County line. The Trail, created along an abandoned railroad corridor, provides a unique, protected greenspace for walking, jogging, skating, and biking. An average of 160,000 people use the trail each month.
In 2013 a new opportunity opened to the community…the Pinellas Trail went up for adoption! The Pinellas Trail Adopt-A-Mile program is a cooperative partnership between the public/private sector and Pinellas County. Program participants agree to perform cleanups every other month to remove litter and debris over a one-mile segment. Keep Pinellas Beautiful provides trash bags, gloves and report forms at no cost, and volunteers are also provided general liability insurance coverage. Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail adoptions greatly enhance the appearance of the trail and go a long way toward reducing the debris entering our waterways and polluting the natural habitats of our native wildlife.
Initially the Kiwanis Club of Seminole Breakfast adopted a mile that ran from Taylor Park to just south of Ulmerton Road in Largo. In February 2015 we changed our adopted mile to segment 13 in Seminole (look for our two yellow Adopt-A-Mile marker signs). On this mile alone our club has thus far picked up 856 pounds of trash!
Get Involved
Our approximately 1 hour clean-up takes place on the “even” months (Feb, April, June, Aug, Oct and Dec) on a Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. between Seminole City Park and Blossom Lake Park. We usually have at least 6 dedicated club members who faithfully clean the trail and occasionally volunteers from the community will also join us. We receive many appreciative “thank you’s” from trail user’s during this activity. Please wave as you ride or walk by! We’ll be wearing our Kiwanis shirts and caps.
